These days, most of us have heard of the cannabinoids THC and CBD. But, did you know that there are over 100 different types of cannabinoids? While they have a lot in common, most cannabinoids come with their own set of unique properties. Take CBG, for example–while it’s not as well known as CBD or THC, researchers are currently looking into it to discover what specific benefits it has on various health issues, both physical and mental.

What is CBG & How is it Unique?

Much like CBD, CBG (also known as cannabigerol) is a chemical compound found within the cannabis plant. Often, CBG is referred to as the mother of all cannabinoids. Here’s why.

Younger cannabis plants produce a compound called CBGA (cannabigerolic acid), which is an acidic form of CBG. As the cannabis plant ages, the CBGA breaks down into THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) and CBDA (cannabidiolic acid). These are then converted into THC and CBD, while leftover CBGA is transformed into CBG. While THC is known to be psychoactive, CBG and CBD do not have the same effect. CBG and CBD also have different molecular structures from each other, which impact how they react in the brain.

CBG may interact with CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system. These receptors are known to help regulate inflammation and pain. CBG may also have other various therapeutic effects, like working as an antidepressant. It is also known to help patients who report having symptoms from cancer treatments, like chemotherapy, as well as having antibacterial properties.

CBG Benefits and Differences Between CBG and CBD

Several studies have been conducted to discover the therapeutic benefits of using CBG. Within these studies, researchers have found that CBG may have a positive benefit associated with health concerns, like glaucoma, anxiety, inflammatory bowel disorder, and even cancer. Research is also being done to solidify its antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antibiotic properties.

As more CBG benefits are discovered through fastidious research, interest will grow and we will begin to learn more about this unique cannabinoid in the future. While CBD and CBG are similar, CBG offers a different set of benefits than that of CBD. CBD is known for its unique abilities to improve the mood, provide relaxation, improve sleep, and relieve pain. Many people have started combining the two cannabinoids, because together, they can be very effective to your overall health, wellness, and mental outlook.
